Lance Cooper, an Oujé-Bougoumou band council member, has been charged with breaking into a residence and sexually assaulting a minor.

The 24-year-old Cooper is currently staying in Waswanipi pending a court appearance in Oujé-Bougoumou on February 13.

According to Thierry Potvin, the Crown Prosecutor on the case, the incident allegedly happened on January 30 in the community. The 15-year-old victim cannot be identified due to his age.

Steps are being taken to remove Cooper from office, regardless of the outcome.

“Our election policy says that with that kind of behaviour, a councillor should resign,” said Oujé-Bougoumou Chief Sam Bosum. “We’ll be meeting on the 21st and 22nd to discuss it.”

Cooper was elected on August 11, 2003.
