Every year the Nation desparately phones around to see who gets the kudos for killing the first goose in their community. Geese represent the beginning of spring for many Crees. It is also the end of winter and the lean times for trappers living on country food. So here’s the list of hunters:

Wemindji – Matthew Mayappo killed three geese on April 8th at Kilometre 20 sometime after 3:00 p.m.

Waswanipi – Benoit Gull killed one goose on April 8th at 11:30 a.m., a few hours later Henry Gull killed another goose

Waskaganish – Don Jonah killed the first goose on April 9th at 4:45 p.m. Washawshibi – Fred Mowatt shot the first goose on the morning of April 9th

Eastmain – Norman Gilpin killed one goose on April 15th.

Nemaska – Eric Cheezo killed one goose on April 16th.

Ouje-bougoumou Patrick Neeposh killed the first goose on April 16th at 6:40 p.m.

Willie Shecapio Blacksmith allegedly killed a goose two weeks before that, but it was not reported.

Chisasibi – Charlo Coonishish got the first goose on April 16th at LG-1. Paul Georgekish killed another goose the same day

Mistissini – Don McCleod killed the first goose on April 17th at 5:45 p.m.
