The Waswanipi band has released the first issue of its new magazine, Waswanipi Post

The issue contains articles by the Chief and the band’s lawyer, and a scathing editorial by the magazine’s editor, Romeo Saganash, attacking Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come.

The piece takes the Grand Chief to task for the way Crees responded to the threat of Quebec separation. “Grand Chief Coon Come merely sailed in the direction that the wind of panic was blowing,” Saganash wrote, adding that the Cree position was “pitiful” and “characteristic of yellow nationalism.”

Saganash suggests that due to Coon Come’s “manoeuvring,” Crees chose to side with “Canada’s dubious yesterdays over Quebec’s uncertain tomorrows.”

“Grand Chief Coon Come shrewdly highjacked an historical opportunity and threw his people at the feet of Canada, in the ‘prison’—as someone else said not too long ago—of the status quo,” he wrote. “An occasion, unique and historical, was wasted.”
