There’s something about summer that gets Natives outside. Just when the Quebecgovernment was heaving a sigh of relief that the Mi’gmaq blockade was dismantled alongcome rumours of another one. This time its La Romaine Montagnais First Nation on theLower North Shore. They are telling Quebec that unless the dispute over fishing rightsin the Etamamiou River is resolved, Highway 138 will be shut down. The bone of contentionis that exclusive rights to fish the river have been given to Baie ComeauLtee. The Montagnais argue that they have traditional rights to the river. ChiefGeorges Bacon and others appeared in court August 19 on charges of ignoring andviolating a court injuction not to fish, which were issued July 17. Montagnais saythat they have sent a letter to Premier Lucien Bouchard to intervene before thesituation escalates. No response has been received by the Montagnais at the time ofprinting.
