Makivik President Simeonie Nalukturuk has apologized to the people of Nunavik for getting into a car accident after drinking alcohol.
Nalukturuk made the apology on the “Qittaissaut” program broadcast by the TNI radio service in Salluit. The Inuit leader “promised to do better next time around,” reported Nunatsiaq News.
Asked for a statement, Makivik spokesman Stephen Hendrie replied,
“This is a private matter. The corporation has no official comment.” Nalukturuk could not be reached for comment by The Nation.
Montreal police can’t release information about possible charges in the case until or unless a court hearing is held.
Zebedee Nungak, Makivik’s first vice-president, refused to provide The Nation with any details about the incident. “If you didn’t hear it (the radio), I’m not about to enlighten you,” he said. “He has already made a comment to his constituents.”
