Citing his fight to stop Hydro-Quebec’s dam projects in the North, a U.S. travel magazine has given Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come a $10,000 environmental award.

Conde Nast Traveler gave its fifth annual Environmental Award to the Grand Chief for his fight against “a dam that would wipe out his world.”

In its November issue, the magazine recounts the experiences that spurred Grand Chief Coon Come into politics, details the heart problems that seem to push him to work harder and praises his dedication.

“The success has been that he has elevated an environmental issues to a human-rights issue,” says environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the article.

Hydro-Quebec issued a statement calling the award a “victory for propaganda and for disinformation about the environment,” according to a report in the Gazette.
