Montreal may be the City of Festivals, but the only one worth seeing in my book is Fant-Asia.
For the third year, Fant-Asia offers the action-movie buff a buffet of disturbing and mind-blowing delights you must not miss if you are in Montreal.
We’ve got Kung Fu classics like Prodigal Son Pulls no Punches. For you martial-arts
fans out there, this is a true gem which showcases the famous Wing Chun style like no other film. Fast, dirty, technically perfect, you can see it a dozen times and still see something new.
We are also blessed with Hong Kong director John Woo’s wicked “splatter films” The Killer and Hard-Boiled, two of the best action movies ever made that redefined the whole genre both in Asia and Hollywood. This is what action is all about!
You’ve also got Japanese animation, like Ghidrah: The Three-Headed Monster. The
festival brochure says: “The fate of the Earth is threatened by the onset of a magnetic fireball which heralds the arrival of Ghidrah, the ultimate planet killer.” Crazy.
And a definite must-see: The Dentist 2. Featuring Corbin Bernsen, the divorce lawyer from LA Law, this unique horror movie is described as “mouth-shredding” and “gory.” The director explained, “I want to make a film that will do to dentistry what Jaws did for water.”
Fant-Asia continues for another week and a half, ending August 9. The Nation’s picks are: Martial Arts ofShaolin (July 31, 7 p.m.), starring Jet Li, Gonin (Aug. 1, 6:10 p.m.), Kung Fu Cult Master (Aug. 2,12 p.m.), Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (Aug. 2, 4:45 p.m.), Hardware (Aug 3, 9:50 p.m.), The Killer (Aug 4, 7 p.m.), Master of the Flying Guillotine (Aug. 5, 9:20 p.m.), Crippled Avengers (Aug. 8, 2:45 p.m.), The Dentist2 (Aug. 8,11:00 p.m.) and Vampires (Aug. 9, 9:45 p.m.)
