The Eastmain search and rescue team successfully recovered a Waskaganish snowmobiler who was reported missing on March 22.

The search brought together five different departments from Eastmain and Waskaganish. The search for the man, who has not been identified, started at 7 pm and ended when he was recovered at 11:30 pm.

He was found in good spirits despite obvious discomfort from the bitter cold.

Brian Halcro, one of the police officers who responded to the call was elated. “There was a bit of trepidation because of the fierce storm, but we had no choice but to go out because we were advised that the person’s snowmobile was in bad shape,” said Halcro.

“We knew that we had to do something. Jeremy and Jonathan Cheezo really helped a lot because they are familiar with the terrain,” said Halcro, who arrived in Eastmain two months ago.

“He hugged us and was happy that we showed up. He was heading in the opposite direction of the community and I don’t think he would have lasted the night.”
