Just don’t call on entertainer Tom Jackson for medical advice even though he now can add doctor to his name. Laurentian University awarded the Native actor/singer/ director an honourary Doctor of Letters degree on June 5. Standing behind Jackson (see photo) is Dr. Emily Faries, a Cree professor of Native Studies at the University of Sudbury and a National Aboriginal Achievement winner.

Jackson was recognized as a Native role model as well as a tireless worker for charities.Laurentian University praised him for his work during the Winnipeg flood, the “Huron Carol”fundraising concerts and the “Dreamcatcher Summer Tour.” The tour delivered a message ofempowerment to Native communities with high youth suicide rates after a suicide by a fellowcast member of the show North of 60.
