Abraham Rupert ousted after two terms.

Roderick Pachano has defeated Chisasibi Chief Abraham Rupert and will now take over the reins of the Cree Nation’s largest community.

Rupert led his people over two terms through two major agreements, a battle for the beloved Rupert River and numerous other battles including his staunch stance against the Paix des Braves Agreement.

He was defeated 375 ballots to 285 in an election many thought would be much closer.

Returning officer Thomas Shem declared Pachano the winner on August 27.

The community also voted on an election change for this year that will see the appointment of the new deputy chief and councillors taking place at a later date. The two separate elections are slated to happen on September 20.
