Due to the fall goose break, the Cree Nation of Chisasibi Recreation Department will be holding its 2nd Annual Northern Lights Basketball Camp and 3-on-3 Tournament on October 16 to 22 instead of September 11 to 17. The Invitational 5-on-5 tournament, which was scheduled for October 20 to 22, will instead be replaced by the 3-on-3 tournament.

The camp and tournament are being organized for the youth aged 10-29 years of age who are interested in learning or improving on their basketball skills. Our intention is to provide a camp to players of all skill levels, from beginners up to a high level of competitive basketball. Our goal is to provide an educational and enjoyable camp for the youth, giving them the chance to interact with their peers, as well as with positive adult role models.

We have invited three guest coaches/ speakers from out of town to coach and assist in the organization of the Northern Lights Basketball Camp. We also have several experienced coaches here in Chisasibi who will be participating in the October 20, 1995 camp and tournament.

We would like to give the youth in other communities the chance to attend the camp. However, we understand that most youth are attending school during the week of the camp. In order to accommodate the youth from other communties, the James Bay Eeyou School in Chisasibi is willing to have special library hours and perhaps a tutor for the out-of-town students.

We would like to encourage all communities and schools to sponsor a student or students who are interested in attending the camp and tournament. In past years, the basketball programs in all Native communities have been building because of continuous strong interest in the sport. The youth in the communities have especially been very enthusiastic about the game and improvements in their abilities have been tremendous.

Each student is responsible for transportation costs and $25 for registration. We will provide lodging.
