Salluit resident Peter Keatainak, 18, shot Hassina Kerfi-Guetteb, 43, an adult education teacher with the Kativik School Board in the neck in the tiny Inuit community before shooting and killing himself February 25.

The incident has left the community and the teachers dumbfounded and searching for answers.

The teacher was transported to the Inuulitsivik Hospital in Puvirnituq and then to the Montreal General Hospital.

Her condition is stable.

A psychologist and social worker accompanied investigating police to the community within a few hours of the incident. Two crisis intervention specialists from Montreal also came to begin working with school staff and students.

The Salluit teachers had asked that certain conditions be met before they returned to the classroom. Less than a week later, they uneasily went back to work.

The School Board has arranged for professionals to return to the schools in Salluit within six weeks to ensure that staff and students are recovering from these tragic events.
