People in all the Cree communities were shocked at the news that a vehicle carrying some young people from Chisasibi was involved in a terrible accident.

The accident, which occurred on Monday, Oct. 12, on Route 113 outside Lebel-sur-Quévillon, claimed the lives of Theodore Sam, 16, and Patrick Neacappo, 15. A third passenger, Frederick Sam, 18, succumbed to his injuries two days after the accident, according to a police statement.

Four other passengers in the Suburban were gravely injured, all aged between 16 and 21, and two suffered minor injuries, aged 17 and 28.

The young people were members of the Chisasibi Warriors basketball team and were going home after a tournament in Mistissini. The accident happened at around 3:30 p.m.

The injured were first taken to the Centre de santé Lebel for treatment, and later to the Centre hospitalier Hôtel-Dieu d’Amos.

Quévillon municipal police are investigating the exact causes of the accident.They said in a statement it was probably the result of a tire blowout that caused thevehicle to lose control.
