Band manager Samuel Gull was happy to hear the Grand Council of the Crees had met with the government and had made a few breakthroughs in policing.

Waswanipi police had been laid off since October 9 after the local Band Council decided to suspend police services when council members noticed there was a $210,000 overdraft.

No police funds were received from Quebec this year. The council said policing services would be suspended until Crees have a firm commitment from Quebec.

Gull said Waswanipi wasn’t the only one feeling the pressure. “It’s the same across the board for all nine Cree communities. No one has gotten funding,” he said.

Gull said police would be returning to work on October 15 as a result of the GrandCouncil’s agreement-in-principle with Quebec on police.
