On Jan. 22 and 23, 2000, the Rencontre Patinage Plus figure skating competition was held in Ville Marie Quebec for over 280 skaters from all over the Abitibi region. Thirty one skaters from the Chisasibi Skating Club participated in this competition and returned with forty nine medals.
The five youngest skaters (aged six and seven) from Chisasibi were entered in two categories. Team Elements and Team Interpretive. The other skaters each participated in three categories – Solo, Team Elements and Team Interpretive. In the Solo event each skater performed a minute or minute and a half program to music. Each routine included required elements. Skaters were marked by judges on their execution of these required elements and their artistic presentation. In the team element, each member of a team (maximum five skaters) was required to perform a specific skating skill. The marks from the judges by each member of the team were then totaled to determine the team winners. The team interpretive event was divided by age and each team of five skaters was required to make up and then perform a routine to a musical theme from Pipi Longstocking or Mulan or Disco. Teams were judged on their musicality, creativity, coverage of ice, team work, costumes and performance.
The Chisasibi skaters entered in twenty two events and won one or more medals in seventeen of these events. The Board of Directors of the Chisasibi Skating Club is busy planning our Northern Highlites 2000, The Millennium Show which will be held at Job’s Memorial Gardens on April 17 and 18, 2000. As this ice show will be the last for a year or two, Jozef Sabovcik, Elizabeth Manley and the pair team of Hartshorn and Sweilding have agreed to return as special guest skaters to help the Chisasibi Club celebrate the new millennium. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
Congratulations to all of the following for a job well done.
